[Translate to kr:] New IATA regulations for the air transport of lithium batteries

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has adopted a significant change to the transport regulations for lithium-ion batteries. From 1 January 2026, lithium-ion batteries contained in or shipped with appliances may only be transported with a maximum state of charge (SoC) of 30%.

This requirement already applied to loose lithium-ion batteries that are shipped separately. What is new is that batteries that are installed in devices or transported together with them are now also subject to the same restrictions. The implementation of this regulation will require many companies to significantly adapt their production and shipping processes.

For RRC customers, everything remains unchanged - because we integrated these requirements into our processes long before they were introduced.

What exactly will change?

Until now, manufacturers and retailers had to ensure that loose lithium-ion batteries were shipped with a maximum SoC of 30%. This has been a fixed IATA requirement for several years and is taken into account by many battery manufacturers.

From 1 January 2026, however, this requirement will be significantly extended:

  • Batteries that are installed in appliances (PI 967) may only be transported with a maximum SoC of 30%.
  • Batteries that are packed together with appliances (PI 966) are also subject to this restriction.
  • Battery-powered vehicles (PI 952) must be shipped with a reduced charge.
  • Loose lithium-ion batteries (PI 965) retain the existing 30 % limit.

While the regulation for loose batteries has been mandatory for years, the change now means that OEMs and equipment manufacturers must also adapt their logistics processes. RRC customers are already on the safe side.

While many companies are now facing the challenge of reorganising their production, warehousing and logistics accordingly, RRC customers remain relaxed.

We have always ensured that our batteries are shipped with a state of charge below 30 % - regardless of whether they are shipped as a single battery or in combination with an appliance.

RRC sets standards in the industry

As a leading manufacturer in the field of high-quality lithium-ion batteries, we go beyond mere compliance. We proactively set standards for safety and compliance long before legal requirements come into force.

With our proven ‘Shipping Mode’ technology, we have designed our batteries for safe transport at an early stage. This means that our customers do not have to make any adjustments to their processes, while the majority of the industry now has to rethink its entire supply chain.

Stay compliant. Stay worry-free. Stay ahead with RRC.
