Regulatory Updates on PSE, CCC and PFAS

PSE Certification Compliance
 

Here have been recent updates to the Product Safety Electrical Appliance & Material (PSE) certification, which is crucial for manufacturers and distributors in Japan.

Difference between diamond shape and round marks
The diamond shape mark is applied to “Specified Electrical Appliances and Materials” like power supplies, whereas the round mark is applied to “Other Electrical Appliances and Materials” like batteries.

Recent Changes in PSE Certification

  • Enhanced Safety Standards: The new PSE regulations include stricter safety standards for batteries, particularly concerning overcharge protection, temperature control, and prevention of short circuits. These enhancements are aimed at reducing the risk of accidents and improving overall product reliability.
  • Documentation and Testing: Manufacturers are now required to provide more comprehensive documentation and undergo more rigorous testing procedures to obtain and maintain PSE certification. This includes detailed reports on material sourcing, safety tests, and quality control measures.

At RRC, we have already implemented the necessary changes to ensure our products meet the new PSE standards before December 2024. Importing Batteries to China since July 2024
 

As of July 31st, 2024, all our newly manufactured standard batteries bear the new China Compulsory Certification (CCC) mark, which is now mandatory for all battery products imported into or sold in China.

The CCC certification is a mandatory safety and quality mark for products entering the Chinese market. It is enforced by the Chinese government to ensure that products meet essential safety, health, and environmental standards. For batteries, the CCC certification includes testing for electrical safety, fire resistance, and overall product reliability.

Our path to compliance
This process involved close collaboration with our cell manufacturers, who needed to obtain their CCC certificates first before we could proceed with certification for our battery packs. Despite the tight timeline, our team worked diligently to ensure that all newly manufactured products would be certified by the July 31st deadline.
 

PFAS Regulation Compliance
 

Understanding PFAS and its impact
PFAS, commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," are a group of man-made chemicals that have been widely used in various industries due to their resistance to heat, water, and oil. However, these substances have come under increasing scrutiny because of their persistence in the environment and potential health risks.

Recent regulatory changes across the globe, particularly in the European Union and the United States, have imposed stricter limits on the use of PFAS in manufacturing processes, including in battery production.

As part of our compliance strategy with PFAS regulations, we are implementing the following measures:

  • We are proactively eliminating the use of PFAS in our production processes
  • To ensure ongoing compliance, our products undergo stringent testing to detect any trace of PFAS
  • We work closely with our supply chain partners to ensure that all raw materials used in our products will be PFAS-free.
